hairy haley

since i moved to chicago (4 years ago), i decided that i would focus on finding a style that was me. for years in missouri i lived in a world of two options: long or short. no color, no styles, nothing. i’ve always had great stylists or so i thought but perhaps that was because i was going in and telling them to do a trim. in my new life i wanted something different, i wanted to find how to wear this thing that hangs out on my head.

since then i started a photo log of every hair cut i’ve had. here are the highlights (and in the highlights there are no highlights, booyah!):

image

(bangs are hard in the summer. they stick to your forehead. bangs are killer in winter. they look amazing under a stocking cap)

image

(this is my lego hair and i loved it. a young asian school girl hair cut makes every outfit look polished)

image

(after years of playing with highlights, i went full into color with a switch to blonde. i still to this day rub how awesome this color was in the face of a girlfriend who “didn’t think it would be a good idea to go blonde”. WRONG! don’t listen to girlfriends they don’t know)

image

(after going blonde, i realized to have healthy hair you have to go shorter. this was the shortest i had ever had my hair. HAHA! i laugh at this now)

image

(i love blonde but it sincerely limited how much color i could put in my wardrobe. i’m a girl who loves her color and brunette just allows for me to go all out and crazy)

image

(finally i was ready to cut it off. ponytail? who needs it. this was my big moment of finally telling myself that my mom was wrong. i didn’t need all of that hair, i could totally wear it short! and i remembered earrings are great and people could finally see them)

image

( a little bit shorter now… a little bit shorter now)

image

(a little bit blonder now… a little bit blonder now)

image

(a little bit redder now!)

image

(red - was - terrifying! when it looked good, god damn it looked good, but when it was bad LORD help me! red fades like a crush in 7th grade, overnight!)

image

(why am i growing out my hair? is there any reason? am i crazy person? in the shower, i twist it back and put it in a mini pony and gush about how far ive come! in the year 2012, i will have long hippie hair… unless something else strikes my fancy before then. HIGHLY likely!)

that's so raven

i’m sick and grumpy so i’ll make this short and sweet. you come for the pictures anyway, my witty banter is just icing on the cake.

dark hair is the best color of hair, you want to know why? it looks good with EVERY color of outfit and you can wear ANY kind of makeup. that’s it. simple, huh? here is the kicker though, in order to have a kick ass dark hair color you must, 100% must, have an actual style or your hair will wear you. in order to own the raven look, tease the top, cut blunt bangs, shear the side and wear it short, put a little wave in it or pair with adorable accessories. a blank slate is what you will have and it is up to you to utilize it or you don’t deserve to have it.

up up and a-wedding

well it’s freaking wedding season - whoop-di-do.

every freaking person in the world is getting married and i’m invited to drink for free at their events. this is good and bad. i love the idea of drinking on someone else’s dollar, trust you/me, but the issue i have with weddings is that years have passed by and the event is still the same. the dresses are ugly (and guess what you WON’T ever wear them again, don’t let the bride tell you that you will), the groomsmen are usually tools (there is always one who has a unibrow and will potentially wear his suit with sandals and socks) and the hair hasn’t changed in years.

i’m going to share a secret with everyone. tight curls, tendrils, tons of hairspray and a gob of bobby pins smells of prom, not your wedding. try something new, something interesting, something, dare i say timely instead of timeless. you’re getting married in 2011 or 2012, why does it have to be timeless?

if you must get married, then let’s think about some new updos to use, eh?

(ps - watch out. i drink and don’t dance and mock people at weddings)

so trendy

just like anyone else, i love mail (i love mail, yeah!) so when i got this message i thought i’d write back to not only self-proclaimed blogger but to everyone.

self-proclaimed-blogger asked:

what hairstyles do u think are in for 2011? if u have time can u blogg some ideas u think… if ur busy i understand… btw love ur blogg tons of ideas that help me lots!

although the entire blog is about cute styles/color that are trending, i do think it’s nice to have a list. these are my tops.

knot your normal updo -

hair knots look so freakin adorable. i’m super jealous of those who have long hair. so jealous it makes me just want to yank them by their door knob of hair.

image

image

image

volume … because you can -

for years sleek-no-flyaway-hair has been the tits, but now frizzy and voluminous is all the rage. it’s about time, we were all starting to look like drowned rats.

image

image

image

walk in the park waves -

last week i discussed the demise of the “beach hair”. waves no longer need a crunch to have some shape. keep it light and airy and for gods sake get a brush through it.

image

image

image

unbeweavable texture -

long gone are the days of a tight french braid plastered down with hair spray. these braids and hair weaves are easy breezy with no worry of whoopsie-daisy loops or missed a spot stringies. it is a set it and forget unpolished look that is perfect for spring/summer/autumn.

image

image

image

image

the return of the tail -

athletic girls rejoice! the pony is back. put a spin on it by adding a barrette or head band, but all in all this is a quick fix for a night out. you just can’t mess this up but if you need a good resource check out this link:

image

trailer blazer -

i’m super fired for this hair color trend. red is shocking, angelic and oh so naughty. this is NOT for everyone as it costs a fortune to maintain if you are not naturally copper by nature (and if you are for the love of god embrace this!).

image

image

image

image

back to your roots -

put down the phone to your colorist and take advantage of this while you can! dark roots are in, but heed my advice when i say you cannot have dark roots with dirty hair. step into the shower and forget the cap, your shit needs to be clean or else you’ll look straight homeless.

wave bye to "beach hair"

you know what trend i hate? this thing called beach hair. i mean, i live in chicago and we have these dirty ass “beaches” where kids wear diapers in lake michigan and old men are sweaty and covered in sand. i do NOT want to have beach hair, in fact i don’t want to have beach anything. crunchy and all fly-away crazy, beach hair is out.

if beach hair refers to having awesome waves then let’s freakin call it something absolutely lovely like saturday-afternoon-walk-in-the-park hair or got-lucky-and-now-i’m-going-to-get-a-fountain-soda hair.

waves are always in vogue. the trend this year is a more soft wave, one that looks brushed thank god! twist those wet locks and use some product but dear god don’t buy anything that gives you “beach hair”, you’re better than that.
