joey two toned

i’ve always thought of myself as an adapter; someone who has tried it all and who is up for anything, but there is one hair trend i adore but am terrified to try.

two toned!

two faced? ok. too cool for school? of course. but two toned is something that i think is for the half brave and half crazy. now we’re not talking about going a week with dark roots, we are talking about making your hair look like you just don’t get a shit about the difference. it’s like a punk homeless person with a switchblade… to pull this off you have to know how to use the switchblade but prefer to use it as a cute accessory that matches your boots instead.

goal for 2011?  i think i found it.

messy bessy

i’ve never been good at explaining how to do things to hair. i’m terrible as i am a try-it-and-if-it-doesn’t-work-wash-it kinda girl, but i found an incredibly fun and good to know blog post by joanna goddard from Cup Of Joe (one of my fav blogs btw). who knew that something supposedly so easy as a messy pony needed so many steps, but i appreciate the outline by joanna and her “hair genius” friend.

Reblogged Messy Side Ponytail

My lovelies, you know the messy side ponytail from J. Crew’s spring lookbook? Well, I really wanted to learn how to do it myself, so I invited over my friend Caroline (who is a hair genius) to explain how to get the look, and the fabulous Jamie Beck took a few photographs. (What I love love love about this style is how the top looks like a beehive!)

Here are Caroline’s steps, if you’d like to try it out….

1. Start with day-old hair…meaning it’s been a day since you’ve washed it. (If you must wash your hair, then use a volumizing spray to add oomf; and if your hair is oily, use a French dry shampoo to build body and texture.) Now make a deep side part on one side of your hair. You can use a rat-tail comb to get an extra straight part.

2. Backcomb the top quarter of your hair. Basically, brush the hair downwards toward your scalp so it’s sort of frizzy and can stand on its own.

3. Gently brush the very top layer of your hair to make it smooth on the top. That way, all the backcombing will be hidden under the layer that you brushed. Still, don’t brush too much, you want it a little messy.

4. Take the entire backcombed section and pin it behind your head. To make it secure, place the bobby pins in an “X.”

5. Now take all your hair and put it in a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Tighten the rubber band as tight as you can. This will help “push” your hair up, creating more volume at the top.

5. You can either leave the rubber band exposed, or hide it by taking a small half-inch section of hair from the ponytail and wrapping it around the rubber band. Take a small bobby pin and pin the hair to the rubber band.

6. Rough up the ponytail with your fingers to match the texture at the top of your hair. Use the same motion as you did to back comb, but use your fingers instead, since this will create a messy texture but will be softer and gentler than using a comb. Remember, this look isn’t about perfection; it looks best slightly messy.

Let’s do it! Thank you so much, Jamie and Caroline! xoxo

grin and barrette

well kids, i couldn’t take it anymore and i cut my hair all off. well mostly off. i now officially look like a sleek, euro, super villain and that is exactly what i was going for. i’m not self absorbed enough to think you guys want pics of me so here is my inspiration:

it feels really nice to not have my mullet. if i had left it there to trail behind me like a shadow, i would have had pin it back with something. good thing barrettes are making a ginormo come back. they’ve come a long way from the pinching, pulling apparatus that moms would top with ribbons and uninflated balloons. barrettes now are sophisticated, funky and a TOP item to throw in your summer beach bag or after-work primp purse. my current style lends for the below one to work perfectly for those days when my blunt bangs just aren’t cuttin’ it.

( i have this particular barrette in bright pink and when i had long hair it was perfect for an undone/done look)

has this inspired you? me too. i did some digging and looky here at some fun etsy finds. if you don’t snatch it up. i will. oh yeah and i made a rule long ago never to wear feathers in my hair because birds are modern day disgusting dinosaurs and i don’t support them, faux or no.

ol' carrot top

chicago just had the worst storm in 30 years. what this meant was i stayed in bed all day long and wore a stocking hat to hide what can only be described as the greasy ball of hay that was my hair. in times like these when all i see is white and gray and dingy black, i really need a splash of color. i have been several hair colors under the sun but the one that i couldn’t keep up was the one i’m most intrigued by: red.

unlike a brunette or a blonde, red headedness simply cannot be duplicated. that shit is IMPOSSIBLE to keep from fading and losing its luster in just days. i’m always uber jealous of those who have it naturally. and besides the fact that they are often asked “if the carpet matches the drapes”, i think they know they are lucky. it seriously is like they have a pretty awesome built in accessory.
